The album relied more heavily on Martin Barre's electric guitar than the band had since the 1970s which made the album the more popular among Tull fans as many of them disapproved of the electronic/synthesizer direction followed by Jethro Tull in the early and mid-1980s. However, several tracks still featured drum machine instead of a live drummer. Keyboardist Peter-John Vettese was now absent and it was Ian Anderson who contributed the synth programming. Album sleeve only listed Ian Anderson, Martin Barre and Dave Pegg as official band members.

The Broadsword and The Beast is an album released by Jethro Tull on April 10, 1982 (see 1982 in music) and according to Ian Anderson in the liner notes of the remastered CD, contains some of Jethro Tull's best music. It mixes electronic sound with acoustic instruments and is a cross between the synthesizer sound of the 1980's and the folk-influenced style that Tull had in the previous decade.

A Passion Play is a concept album released by Jethro Tull. Apparently concerning the spiritual journey of one man in the afterlife, it is similar to Thick as a Brick in that it is one long track split across both sides of the LP vinyl record (actually a medley of segued shorter songs,) save for the interruption of the oddly whimsical spoken-word piece "The Story Of The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles". The dense lyrics, filled with wordplay and allegory, along with music that some found lacking in creativity compared to earlier work, have made A Passion Play one of the most disputed albums in Tull's catalog. On its release in 1973, it received generally negative reviews; nevertheless, it sold well enough to reach #1 on the charts in the U.S (in the U.K however, it did not do as well, reaching #13).
Script of the concept:
Act 1: Ronnie Pilgrim's Funeral: a winter's morning in the cemetery.
Act 2: The Memory Bank: a small but comfortable theatre with a cinema-screen (the next morning).
Act 3: The business office of G. Oddie & Son (two days later).
Act 4: Magus Perdē's drawing room at midnight.

Aqualung is the fourth studio album by the rock band Jethro Tull, released in 1971. It was their first album with John Evan as a full-time member, their first with new bassist Jeffrey Hammond and last album featuring Clive Bunker on drums. The first side of the LP contains a series of six character sketches, including two sketches of people of questionable repute (title character Aqualung and Cross-Eyed Mary) and two autobiographical tracks including "Cheap Day Return", written by band leader Ian Anderson while returning from a visit to his critically ill father. The overall message of the lyrics on the second side is said to be "pro-God but anti-church", and makes the statement that organized religion can actually restrict a person's relationship with his God instead of enhancing it. Anderson was not intending to make Aqualung a concept album.

Benefit is the third album by Jethro Tull. It was released in April 1970. It was the first album to feature John Evan on keyboards (albeit as a session player), and the last to feature Glenn Cornick on bass guitar. It achieved number 3 in the UK album charts.[1] The album is heavier than its predecessor, Stand Up, and many of the tracks feature more elaborate arrangements than Tull's earlier material, for example, backwards flute on "With You There To Help Me" and backwards piano and sped up guitar on "Play In Time".
