world music |
The band formed in 2001 shows a unique and complex notion of songwriting. Their music inspired by South American and Balkan rhtyms like tango and folk music, but there are also freejazz elements combined together with French music hall or cabaret songs, ballads, even rock'n'roll pieces. This mixture evokes the world of the '30s cabaret world but as well can remind us of a circus cavalcade.
Imre Kamondy, one founder of the band, vocalist, writer of the lyrics, and formerly an actor, by staging i.e. wearing custumes and applying stage actions makes their concerts rather a theatre performance. The other founder of the band György Verebes also vocalist and songwriter is from a Hungarian region called Vajdasag in Serbia and currently he is the leader of the Colony of Artists in Szolnok. Plays the piano very emotionally and improvisatively giving a strong character to the band. A centre figure of the band and concerts is the multitalented composer Benedek Darvas can play almost every instruments and not only the composer of Cabaret Medrano but several theatre plays as well. János Nemes flutist plays the saxofon and the kavala too. Bass guitarist Gábor Horváth played in popular underground bands and became a well known musician. Drummer Ferenc Pfeiler is known from his ashing and lively style also plays in etnomusic groups and theatre performances.

All That Hasn’t Happened (Ez mind nem volt)
|
rock |
The album’s title “Ez mind nem volt” (All That Hasn’t Happened) was inspired by the key phrase of the song “Lány a buszon” (Girl on the Bus). This album encompasses a much wider range of styles than the previous one: the theatrical elements are still present but this time with a more modern pop tone. The band invites us to an intriguing 56-minute journey across the stormy sea of life that is an excellent representation of the variety Cabaret Medrano offers. It presents the Boban Markovic Balkan style that is well-known from Kusturica’s films and which grasps the beauty and spleen of life with such merciless honesty you can nearly smell it. It presents us the merriness in tears that is characteristic to gypsy tango; and the characteristics of Cuban music played by the veteran members of Buena Vista Social Club, an atmosphere spiced with light Havannah cigar smoke. Songs inspired by poets Ady Endre, Radnóti Miklós and Weöres Sándor also appear in the album. In a few songs we get a glimpse of the Berlin cabaret world mixed with variety show’s spicy artistic feel that invokes the 1930’s. The Marquez’s world’s sensuality, Bulgakov’s evilly grotesque humour, Tom Waits’ jazz and blues pub feeling also appear in the album.
Cabaret Medrano is impossible to determine with a single style. The album combines wild passion with innocently fragile simplicity.
